Deputies: Impaired driver pulled gun after leaving traffic stop on foot

WAYNE COUNTY. N.C. (WITN) -- A Mount Olive man was arrested Thursday after pulling a gun on deputies and running from the scene of a traffic stop.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, a deputy with the county's DWI Task Force saw a vehicle driving erratically shortly before 9 p.m. on Highway 117 South in Goldsboro.

The driver was suspected to be impaired.

Deputies say the driver Ezekiel Simmons, 32, eventually stopped near the West Haven community before taking off from the traffic stop on foot.

As the responding officer chased after Simmons, the suspect pulled a gun and turned towards the deputy, before throwing the gun onto the street.

Simmons entered a wooded area where a perimeter was formed with assistance from the Goldsboro Police Department and Highway Patrol.

Goldsboro Police K9 "Ghost" located Simmons hiding in a water filled ditch where was arrested.

Simmons is being charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government official, as well as multiple impaired driving charges.

The suspect is being held on a $19,500 secure bond.
