ATLANTIC BEACH, NC (WITN) - The demolition of a mobile home park in one Eastern Carolina beach town has officially begun.
The homes located within the Channel Bay Mobile Home Park in Atlantic Beach are being torn down and scheduled to be replaced with 10 duplexes at the old causeway road site.
The owner of the property chose not to renew the existing leases.
The council and town planning board unanimously approved the proposed project last April.
While many people may now have to look elsewhere to vacation or retire, neighboring residents say they feel for those tenants, knowing the same could happen to them as well.
North Shore Resident Kim Pederson said, "It's concerned us for the 12 years we've been here, but it's always a risk you take, you know when you buy something on a leased lot. We heard lots of, you know rumors and stuff that it could happen. Fortunately, we're not as worried about it anymore."
Pederson is a resident of North Shore, a neighboring park to Channel Bay.
She says the ownership group approached their tenants about a year ago with a proposal to buy their properties, that was almost unanimously supported by the tenants.
She says they hope to see movement on a plan in the near future.
