Dan and Shay concert kicks off MumFest, raises money for hurricane relief
MumFest in New Bern kicked off Friday night with a concert from country music stars Dan and Shay.
The WRNS Kickoff Concert to Mumfest started the weekend festivities, but it's the proceeds raised from last night's concert that stole the show.
Minges Bottling and the Pepsico Charitable Foundation matched the expenses associated with getting Dan and Shay to New Bern. This means all the proceeds raised from the concert will go strictly to Hurricane Florence relief efforts in the city.
More than 3,700 people attended the Friday night concert, helping raise nearly 75,000 in relief funds, event organizers said. In addition to the proceeds from the concert, organizers say Mastercard made a sizeable donation to help recovery efforts in New Bern as well.
"MasterCard announced last night that they were contributing $100,000 to the New Bern relief fund," Mumfest Organizer Buddy Bengel said. "So we were really honored and proud that they took time to see what we were doing here to come in and help the people of New Bern, so I can't thank them enough for their contribution to our city."
Organizers also thanked Mastercard's Center for Inclusive Growth President Shamina Singh for helping make the donation possible.
MumFest in New Bern kicked off Friday night with a concert at Lawson Creek Park by Dan and Shay.
Following Hurricane Florence, and faced with the decision on whether to hold MumFest, organizers decided to press on and turn the concert into a fundraiser for New Bern.
Concert goers packed the lawn to hear the country music artists.
WITN's Elizabeth Bateson talked with them about how the concert will now benefit New Bern. Dan said, "We just feel incredible that's one of the things we get to do. We make music for a living and pour our hearts and souls into it and to have a platform to not only touch people's lives with the music and to get to do good things like this for people who's in need and cheer somebody up, is a really cool thing we get to do."
MumFest continues Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
MumFest offers fun-filled entertainment for all ages, and interests including street performers, acrobats, amusement park rides, helicopter and model train displays, and cruising on the Neuse River.

Many downtown businesses also hope you'll stop in and help them on the road to recovery from Hurricane Florence.
