WILSON, NC (WITN) - The SBI is confirming there is a fatality in a shooting that involved a state Division of Motor Vehicles officer in downtown Wilson this morning.
A spokeswoman says the person killed was not the officer, but wouldn't elaborate.
Wilson police say it started when there was a robbery and assault at the Wilson County Senior Center on South Goldsboro Street just before 8:00 a.m.
An employee of the senior center ran next door to the DMV office to alert them about the robbery, according to Assistant County Manager Ron Hunt.
While investigating the robbery, police said a DMV License and Theft officer was involved in a shooting in the 600 block of Jordan Street, which is about a half-mile from the senior center. A DMV spokesman says their officer was not injured.
Hunt says the senior center had just opened when the robber walked into the reception area and an employee approached them. He said the worker received minor injuries in the assault and that the center would reopen on Thursday.
Wilson police said they are investigating the robbery, while the SBI and DMV are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
