Crews begin removing Confederate monument in Pittsboro

PITTSBORO, N.C. (WITN) - Crews have begun the process of removing a Confederate monument outside a courthouse in our state.

Our sister station in Raleigh, WRAL, is reporting that a county official says crews are safely and respectfully removing the monument outside the Chatham County Courthouse and that it will be taken to a safe storage place for the time being.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy wanted to keep it outside the county courthouse, but a Superior Court judge denied the injunction last week.

The statue has stood outside the courthouse in Pittsboro since 1907.
