CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - One Eastern Carolina man is behind bars after leading police on a chase and then jumping into a pond.
Around 4 a.m. Friday morning, a River Bend police officer witnessed two cars leaving 102 Gull Pointe, where a water treatment facility, kayak dock and boat and RV storage are located.
The officer followed the cars and after turning on his lights, one of the cars sped off, reaching speeds of 85 MPH and driving erratically.
The Craven County Sheriff's Office and Trent Woods police arrived to help with the pursuit and the driver of the vehicle was forced to turn into New Bern High School.
Officials say a deputy collided with the suspect's vehicle, forcing him into a fence.
That's when the suspect got out, jumped the fence and took off running.
After losing sight of the suspect, officers heard noises coming from a nearby pond and found 18-year-old Jocqui Whitaker.
He was ordered out of the water and arrested.
Whitaker is facing several charges including illegal passing, reckless driving to endanger and felony flee to elude.
Whitaker was taken into the Craven County Jail under a $100,000 bond.
Whitaker also had six outstanding felony probation violations.
