CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - District leaders in one county here in the east are taking new safety measures for students and staff just ahead of the upcoming school year.
The Craven County School System has hired a safety and security director to help improve the overall security of its schools.
Nick Lucas, a navy veteran and retired police captain with 24 years’ experience will now take on the new role and he's wasting no time making changes to protect students.
Aside from implementing new security systems and protocols for school visitors, he has also implemented a system called ALICE.
Director Nick Lucas said, "the acronym stands for alert, lock-down, inform, counter, and evacuate ALICE is more of an expansion of a traditional lockdown type system it gives you a lot more options and there's a lot more decision making to be made based on what's happening at that time."
