Morehead City/Beaufort bridge reopens after second major crash

MOREHEAD CITY, NC (WITN) - A heavily traveled bridge on the Crystal Coast was closed for most of the morning due to two different major crashes.

The first crash on the U.S. 70 bridge between Morehead City and Beaufort happened around 8:15 a.m.

Police say four vehicles were involved in that crash. Investigators say a station wagon heading east crossed the centerline and hit an SUV.

The SUV then hit a van, while the station wagon then struck a second car.

All drivers and passengers are in stable condition.

The bridge opened at 10:00 a.m. and just 45 minutes later the second accident happened.

Westbound traffic was slow going, police say, and a speeding station wagon swerved into oncoming traffic and ran into a large truck and trailer.

The bridge was shut down for another two hours while that crash was cleaned up.

Police say the driver of the station wagon was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
