GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Law enforcement officers across Pitt County will be staking out on the roof of Walmart Friday morning in an effort to collect donations for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots Foundation.
In shifts, officers will stand on the roof of Walmart at 210 Greenville Boulevard SW until at least 250 bikes are donated.
Winterville Police Chief Ryan Willhite says officers and deputies will stay up their all night if they have to, but he's hoping the community will step up and give back.
"Some people don't even know what's happening and when they see what we're doing, when they come out of the store, they have a bicycle. That feeling of giving is the best part," said Willhite.
Last year, they collected their goal of 100 bikes in just the first two and a half hours.
They've already collected 150 donated bikes at Friday's event.
The bikes can be for a child of any age and purchased at any store.
All of the donations will go directly to Pitt County children in need this holiday season.
The bikes will be handed out Saturday, December 15 at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church to registered families.
