ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WITN) Onslow County residents will have to deal with delays later this month as a popular commuter route was awarded a widening project.
Construction is scheduled to begin as early as January 28th for just over 2.5 miles of Highway 172 from Highway 210 to the back gate of Camp Lejeune.
The DOT says the $12.2 million project will add a center lane which will improve traffic flow.
Because Highway 172 is a commuter route, workers will not be able to close or narrow a lane during the heavy travel times between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Construction is expected to wrap up in May of 2021.
