Connelly defeated at-large councilman Calvin Mercer.

Connelly had 5,786 votes to Mercer's 4,354.

Connelly was just elected to council two years ago and ran for mayor after Allen Thomas resigned to become Executive Director of the North Carolina Global Transpark.

The mayor-elect ran on a platform of attracting new jobs to the area, being vigilant on combating crime, and fiscal responsibility, among other issues.

Mercer has been on council since 2007 and said he was running for mayor to continue making Greenville a city of excellence.
