Community celebrates Chinese New Year with traditional performances, activities

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - A combination of traditional games and performances are helping folks celebrate the Year of the Pig this weekend.

Tuesday marked the start of the Lunar New Year, and traditionally the holiday is celebrated until the Lantern Festival which is held 15 days later.

Performances like the traditional lion dance, captivated the crowd inside ECU's Student Center.

People could also try their hand at Chinese cultural activities like calligraphy and lantern painting.

Sponsors of the event included the Greenville Chinese School and various campus organizations at ECU.

Lucky Xue helped organize the Chinese New Year event and says about 300 people came.

"We are very glad that we have more and more people, local people come here to join us to celebrate the event because we want more local people to understand Chinese culture," Xue said.

The pig is a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, so Xue says 2019 should bring good fortune.
