Victim in Columbia house fire identified

COLUMBIA, N.C. (WITN) - Authorities suspect a grease fire may have started a fire that killed an elderly Tyrrell County man.

Isiah Bassnight, 85, was killed in the 1:00 a.m. Saturday fire at 810 Hwy 64 East, in Columbia.

The home was fully engulfed in flames.

Authorities say Bassnight lived at the home with his 40-year-old daughter and her three children, between the ages of 9 and 12.

The home is a total loss and the Red Cross is helping the family. A GoFundMe site has also been set up to assist the victims.

One person is dead and another is injured after an overnight house fire here in the east.

Around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, the Tyrrell, Creswell, Mid County and Plymouth Fire Departments responded to 810 Hwy 64 East, in Columbia, where a house was fully engulfed in flames.

There was one confirmed fatality as a result of the fire and another person was transported by East Care to Vidant Medical Center to be treated for burns.

The victim's names have not been released at this time.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
