Coast Guard honors petty officer as Enlisted Person of the Year

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) - A petty officer that works off the coast of Eastern North Carolina has been recognized as the Coast Guard's 5th District Enlisted Person of the Year.

3/4 Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Montgomery received the Coast Guard Commendation Medal this weekend during a special ceremony at Camp Lejeune.

Montgomery works aboard the Cutter Maple whose home-port is in Atlantic Beach.

The Coast Guard awarded him for his spirit of pride, professionalism and dedication.

He has managed over a million dollars in contracts for his cutter and has managed different boat crews and watchstanders aboard the Maple, the Coast Guard said.

Montgomery was also recognized for his volunteer service. Following Hurricane Florence he worked more than 20 hours to clean-up neighborhoods and assisted two displaced shipmates find temporary homes.
