Charlotte officer charged with serving alcohol to two children

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WITN) Police in Charlotte are shaken by charges against one of their own.

Charlotte officer Robert Milton is accused of serving alcohol to two children - ages six and one.

The 56-year-old is the biological father of the one year old.

The six year old is the child of the woman with whom he had a prior relationship.

Milton is charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.

"To say that his actions are disappointing, is really hard to search for another adjective. I'm pretty sure some people could come up with one. But his actions do not rise to the level and the standards of this organization that have been tasked with the protecting and serving of the citizens of this community, especially the most vulnerable, including children," said Deputy Chief Gerald Smith of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

"I'm a father, and I think everyone else in here who's an adult knows you don't give kids alcohol, and the level of concern goes up as the age of the children go down," Smith added.

Milton has been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for seven years.

He is now on unpaid administrative leave and it is unclear if he has an attorney.

Both children are okay.
