Charges have been brought in a weekend traffic accident where an elderly man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a hit and run driver.

Washington police say Neal Lawrence is facing felony hit & run resulting in injury/death, death by motor vehicle, and driving while license revoked.

The 12:30 p.m. Saturday crash killed 83-year-old James Whitaker, of Washington. It happened as Whitaker was trying to cross Bridge Street at West 7th Street in his motorized wheelchair.

While there is no pedestrian crosswalk, police say the 37-year-old Lawrence was charged because he left the scene of the accident.

His bond was set at $6,000 and police say there may be additional charges brought against Lawrence.
