Craven County is reporting its third COVID-19 related death.

County health officials say a resident died on Sunday after being diagnosed with the virus on April 2.

No further details about the patient have been released.

North Carolina experienced another major jump in COVID-19 cases with 350 new positive tests confirmed on Sunday.

The increase pushes the statewide total now to at least 6,509.

At least 173 people have died as a result.

In the east, Wayne County again saw the biggest spike with 147 new cases announced between Saturday and Sunday.

Edgecombe County had the next highest increase with nine new cases.

A model released by the University of Washington suggested that North Carolina may have reached its peak in coronavirus cases in the last few days. Other models are less optimistic.

Health officials say there are now more than 6,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state, with 280 new cases identified on Saturday.

The total confirmed cases rose from 5,850 to 6,140, while the death toll increased from 152 to 164.

The state says date shows 43 of those deaths have occurred in nursing homes throughout the state.

State officials also say they are dealing with an outbreak at Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, where more than 250 inmates have tested positive.

Two Eastern Carolina counties have reported new deaths from the coronavirus.

Craven County health officials say a resident died Thursday after testing positive a week before.

Last week, an employee of CarolinaEast Medical Center died from complications from COVID-19.

Late Friday morning, Carteret County said they too had another death. The resident was in their late 60s and had underlying health conditions, according to a news release.

This is the third death so far in Carteret County.

Across the state, there are now 155 deaths from the virus and nearly 5,900 confirmed cases.

Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health has confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Tyrrell County.

Wayne County health officials say there are 13 positive cases at a nursing home in Mount Olive. We are not sure which specific nursing home. They say there are also three cases at an assisted living and two at another, but the name of either were also not released. An Eastern Carolina hospital employee has died from the coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern confirms that an employee passed away today.

The hospital says it is heartbroken over the loss.

This was the first death in Craven County from the virus. The county says the employee became sick a week ago and tests came back positive on Saturday.

Wayne County also confirmed its first death today. The county says the patient was in their 80's and suffered from underlying medical conditions.

This brings to 71 the number of deaths in the state due to COVID-19.

Other deaths today were reported in Dare, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties.

The state Department of Health and Human Services released the latest numbers this morning.

State deaths stand at 65 and do not include ones reported in Carteret, Craven, Dare, Northampton, Pitt & Wayne counties.

There are currently 3,651 confirmed cases of the virus in the state, up from 3,426 on Wednesday.

Here in the east Pitt County has the most cases at 58. The county says government offices will be closed Friday in observance of Good Friday, however, COVID-19 response efforts will remain active.

North Carolina now has at least 58 deaths due to the coronavirus.

The latest death is in Nash County. The Nash County Health Department says a man in his 70's has died from complications related to COVID-19.

Health officials say he had underlying medical conditions. He passed away on Tuesday.

The Department of Health & Human Services said Wednesday morning there were 53 deaths, but those do not include deaths in Nash, Pitt, Northampton and two in Carteret County.

Statewide there are now 3,426 confirmed cases of the virus.

Here in Eastern Carolina, deaths have happened in Bertie, Carteret (2), Hertford County, Nash County, Northampton County, Onslow County, Pitt County, and Wilson County (2).

• Bertie County - 10 cases, 1 death

• Carteret County - 19 cases, 2 deaths

• Craven County - 19 cases

• Currituck County - 3 cases

• Dare County - 10 cases

• Duplin County - 8 cases

• Edgecombe County - 12 cases

• Gates County - 3 cases

• Greene County - 10 cases

• Halifax County - 16 cases

• Hertford County - 5 cases

• Jones County - 3 cases

• Lenoir County - 14 cases

• Martin County - 4 cases

• Nash County - 25 cases, 1 death

• Northampton County - 54 cases, 1 death

• Onslow County - 23 cases, 1 death

• Pamlico County - 3 cases

• Pasquotank County - 10 cases

• Perquimans County - 2 cases

• Pitt County - 55 cases, 1 death

• Washington County - 10 cases, 1 death

• Wayne County - 34 cases

• Wilson County - 38 cases, 2 deaths

The state says 79% of the deaths have been 65 years of age and older, 13% between 50 and 64, and 8% between 25 and 49.
