CARTERET COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Troopers say a Carteret County man is lucky to have escaped serious injuries after his car overturned and ended up in a roadside canal.
The crash happened on U.S. 70 near the North River Bridge in Bettie on Friday.
Gerald Nunnery, of Otway, lost control of his car, according to troopers. After ending up in the canal, his car was submerged to the roof.
Bystanders helped get the man out of his car. Nunnery was checked out but refused to be taken to the hospital.
Rescue crews say this is the fourth accident in the same spot within recent months. Traffic patterns have been changed because of construction of the new North River Bridge.
The Highway Patrol says Nunnery would be charged with a lane control violation.
