UPDATE: Victim identified in Goldsboro pond drowning

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WITN) - Goldsboro officials say 9-year-old Jaylen Suggs from Goldsboro died after being pulled from a retention pond over the weekend.

A nine-year-old boy has died, two days after he was pulled from a retention pond in Goldsboro.

It happened around noon Saturday in the 2000 block of South Slocumb Street.

First responders found the boy and he was first taken to Wayne UNC Health Care and later by helicopter to Vidant Medical Center.

Police are continuing to invest the drowning.

We are learning of a near drowning in Wayne County over the weekend.

Officials with the city of Goldsboro say a boy, between 7-9 years old, went missing in a retention pond off of Slocumb St. around noon Saturday.

The Goldsboro fire department, police department and Wayne County EMS responded to the 1900 block of Slocumb St. after a call of a drowning came in at 12:05 pm Saturday.

Officials say a member with the fire department located the boy who was underwater and was taken immediately to Wayne UNC Healthcare hospital and was later transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

At last check on Sunday, the child was said to be critical condition.

Goldsboro police are investigation the incident.
