Bladen County firefighter honored after falling to her death

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) One community along our coast is mourning after a firefighter died while working.

Mildred Williams was working with the White Lake Fire Department on the Bladen County Water Rescue building along side the Young's Construction to replace metal roofing.

Just after 10:00 Tuesday morning the 37-year-old fell about 15 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The town has honored Williams since the accident. Leaders canceled Tuesday night's board meeting out of respect, and after meeting for dinner together, town firefighters gathered at Colly Chapel Church to grieve over the sudden loss of their colleague.

Mayor Goldston Womble of White Lake says the tragedy has impacted the entire community. "It's really difficult on our firefighters and water rescue personnel but it's a difficult loss for our community too because she was a person who volunteered and gave of her time freely to help others who were in need."

Williams body was escorted to the Cape Fear Valley Bladen County Hospital by first repsponders from the area. Out of respect, two ladder trucks formed an arch with the American flag hanging beneath for the processional to pass trough in route to the hospital.

No information is available at this time about funeral services.
