BBQ Festival on the Neuse continues Saturday in Kinston

KINSTON, NC (WITN) Barbeque teams were busy cooking all day Saturday to see if they had what it takes to take home titles at Kinston's BBQ Festival on the Neuse.

Hungry visitors could get just a taste of all the hard work that goes into becoming an award-winning team.

One team, Kermit's Revenge was hoping to take home another first place win after winning the Sauce Boss competition in the Homemade Division in 2014.

"It's just us. It's just something we enjoy doing together," Kermit's Revenge Team Member Brian Smith said. "His dad has a really good sauce and that seems to be the main point to it. I mean if you got a good sauce, you got good barbeque."

This year 95 teams compete in the Sauce Boss competition. The first place winners included Eric's BBQ Sauce in the Backyard Division and Mike D's BBQ Sauce in the Professional Division.

The festival offered more than just barbeque. There were vendors selling all sorts of items, and sweet treats to taste.

Visitors could also look at a display of classic cars.

"I just decided just to come and look at the cars today and check out the crowd and everything, the good music, the good barbeque. Some of the best that you can get I believe at any festival." Al Barfield, visiting from Goldsboro said.

Saturday was the last day of the 2018 BBQ Festival on the Neuse, which wrapped up around 6 p.m.

Previous Story
Thousands of people were in Kinston Friday night for the first night of the BBQ Festival on the Neuse, and Saturday is expected to be busy as well.

Around 40,000 are expected between the two days.

Friday night there were vendors out, carnival rides, music, the BBQ beef and brew and fireworks.

Around 100 cook teams also started Friday night, with the barbeque to start going on sale Saturday at 11 a.m.

In addition to those teams, new this year is the Best of the Best, where past winners will be barbequing pigs.

Tammy Kelly says, "A lot of our local folks are interested in tasting the winning pigs. So what we've done is assembled a lot of our former champions. I have behind me the last three state whole hog champions, two of our last pig cooking champions from locally, we have four across the street and two more down the road. So folks can buy wristbands and try it directly off the grill and dip it in the sauce made by the winners. I think they're gonna love it."

The Best of the Best tasting starts Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

There is also another full day of events Saturday.
