NEW BERN, NC (WITN) - Mumfest has been a staple in New Bern for nearly forty years. The award-winning festival is entering its 38th year of celebration this October and it has evolved into a successful, fun, economic boost to the community.
One of the biggest changes has come within the last two years. In 2016, event organizers added a third day to the festival which included a kick-off concert. Last year, they hosted Garrett Young and this year will welcome Dan & Shay to Lawson Creek Park.
According to organizers, more artisans have been added to the festival over the years and this year, more than any other will have a wide variety of food options from different vendors. With more than one hundred thousand people flooding the streets of downtown New Bern that second weekend in October, organizers say even with all the changes over the course of time, the purpose of Mumfest remains the same.
Executive Director of Swiss Bear, Lynne Harakal said, "We're obviously at a very different point in our retail history at this point in time, but the purpose still remains the same, and that is to bring people into our downtown. Those people that are familiar with it, and also for those people who aren't, so they can be introduced with how great of a downtown we have here in New Bern."
Harakal adds that vendors and entertainment options are some of the event goers favorites during the festival.
