Autopsy confirms grandmother shot and then home set on fire

CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - An autopsy released today confirms that a grandmother was shot and killed before her Eastern Carolina home was set on fire.

James Gizzi was arrested in Mississippi days after his grandmother was found dead in her home along Highway 55 in Jasper on February 4th.

Marjorie Thompson was identified through dental records.

The autopsy said the 68-year-old woman "had some recent conflict" with her 17-year-old grandson and that Gizzi had stolen the woman's car and driven to Mississippi.

It says Thompson's death was caused by traumatic head injuries, caused by a probable gunshot wound to the head.

A search warrant said the teen confessed to Craven County investigators after his arrest in Mississippi.

He remains in jail without bond.
