Atlantic Beach issues order prohibiting short-term rentals

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WITN) - In light of Governor Roy Cooper's Stay at Home order, Atlantic Beach officials have issued an order regarding short-term rentals.

The following are prohibited:

1. The rental or occupation of a hotel or motel room.
2. The rental of a house or condo for less than 30 days.
3. The rental of an RV campsite for less than 30 days.

"The sooner we can calm down and stop the spread the sooner we can get back open and try to salvage the season," said Atlantic Beach Mayor Trace Cooper.

"I'm kind of glad that they did, because you know they asked people not to come to the beach and they kept coming anyway," added town resident Beth French, who warns the orders haven't stopped some people from visiting the beach.

Mayor Cooper's says he has felt the economic impacts of the pandemic firsthand. Cooper's family owns a motel that decided to close just last week.

"It's going to hurt economically in the short-term but it's just something we've got to do to get on the other side of it," Cooper explained.
