RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina's public universities are another step closer to having the option to sell beer and wine during campus athletic events with a bill that's cleared another General Assembly committee.
The measure passed by the Senate commerce committee on Wednesday gives university trustee boards authority to issue alcohol sale permits on campus. The committee amended the bill to also allow alcohol sales at some leased venues off-campus.
Both alcohol sales and consumption are currently widely prohibited inside athletic venues, but there are some exceptions.
Universities told lawmakers the bill would give them greater control over game-day drinking activities and lead to fewer alcohol-related problems. Some lawmakers expressed concern that the bill would exacerbate binge-drinking issues.
The legislation cleared the House in April and now heads to another Senate committee.
