Algae bloom spreads on Chowan River

CHOWAN COUNTY, NC (WITN) Algae blooms continue to make parts of one river in the east dangerous.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is asking folks to stay out of the Chowan River near Leary Landing.

Officials say the bloom is producing a toxin called Microcystin, which can cause acute health effects during recreational exposure.

Officials say there have been numerous blooms since May, including some near Leary Landing and Arrowhead Beach.
