RICHLANDS, NC (WITN) - The life of one Eastern Carolina student has been tragically cut short after police say the student suffered a medical emergency on the playground and later died.
That student was just 8-years-old and community members say they're both shocked and saddened to learn of this tragedy that happened at Richlands Elementary School.
Richlands Police Chief Ron Lindig says EMS crews were called out to a report of a girl not breathing around 11 a.m. Tuesday to the school's playground.
For some in the community, like new parent Franklin Best, he says it's every parent's worst fear.
"To find out something like that could happen, its scary," he says. "You always have that fear, even when I'm at work, I'm always worried about her."
Police say when they arrived on scene, the school nurse was performing CPR. The student was then taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital where she later died.
The Onslow County Medical Examiner has confirmed that they have the body of 8-year-old Brianna Fullwood.
Onslow County Schools released a statement on Wednesday afternoon saying "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our student... Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they deal with their grief."
For Best, he's thinking about the students who have now lost their friend. "It opens your eyes to a lot more, especially at that age, they are learning and everything, and that's difficult to come over."
Onslow County Schools has said that grief counselors will be at the elementary school this week during this difficult time.
