CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) A 7-year-old boy vacationing in the Outer Banks has been flown to a Virginia hospital after being struck by a sheriff's department vehicle.

Currituck County Fire and EMS Chief Ralph Melton says the child was hit by a four-wheel drive vehicle on Carova Beach shortly before 10am Saturday.

Currituck County Sheriff Matthew Beickert says the deputy involved in the accident was driving a marked patrol jeep and traveling at approximately 5 mph.

The boy sustained minor injuries and was taken to a Norfolk hospital as a precaution and has since been released.

Beickert says he believes the child ran into the path of the patrol vehicle.
