26th Marine Expeditionary Unit deploying Tuesday

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WITN) - Another group of local Marines will head overseas Tuesday.

About 2,500 Marines with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit are scheduled to deploy aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima. This latest deployment is in support of maritime security operations, crisis response and theater security cooperation, while also providing a forward expeditionary naval presence in Europe and the Middle East.

The unit will board the USS Iwo Jima, transport dock ship USS New York, and dock landing ship USS Oak Hill at Naval Station Mayport, Florida and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia.

The 26th MEU is made up of a Command Element, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162 (Reinforced), Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, and Combat Logistics Battalion 26.

The deployment is currently expected to last six months.
