KINSTON, NC (WITN) It's National Fire Prevention Week across the country and one fire department in the east is using it as an opportunity to educate the youth in their community.
Students crawled through smoke filled homes and put a real fire hose to use, all part of the week-long fire safety education put on by the Kinston Fire Department.
More than 1,500 students from across the county will rotate among 10 different stations, each teaching the children a different aspect of fire safety.
Fire and rescue also partnered with the police department and the state's forestry service to take part throughout the week.
Captain William Barrs says the fire prevention education goes until 11:00 a.m. each day this week.
