CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) One recycling program here in the east has helped keep more than 200 tons of trash out of our landfills following Hurricane Florence.
Over the past nine months, the recycling program at Fleet Readiness Center East has diverted 239 tons of Florence related waste, in an effort to keep landfill trash to a minimum.
To put that into perspective, that weight is the equivalent of more than 110 large cars.
Normally, most of the solid waste entering the recycling center is already sorted, but due to recovery efforts and large amounts of mixed waste, the team had to manually sort through the trash. While this took more time overall, it helped to reduce the environmental impact of Hurricane Florence.
