The Viking Nation and community of Elizabeth City State University said goodbye to the long-time "Voice of the Vikings" on the campus radio and in athletics.

Randy Jones passed away last week. A memorial was held on ECSU's campus Thursday and his funeral was held Friday.

Jones not only leaves an indelible mark on Elizabeth City State University, but the entire community. As a referee, area coaches say Jones made an incredible impact on student-athletes throughout northeastern North Carolina.

Randy Jones was a 1996 graduate of ECSU and brought Viking fans many memorable moments.

Jones served Viking athletics as Sports Information Director before taking on his role as the Program Director and on-air personality for WRVS 89.9.

However, college leaders say Randy couldn't let go of his passion for Viking athletics and when he went to WRVS he became their "Voice."

They say, Jones was on the call to bring Viking fans the 2007 CIAA men's basketball championship and additional football championship game appearances.

Randy also had a passion for supporting high schools throughout northeastern North Carolina. He was the driving force behind the Border Clash, which is a basketball showcase that pitted high schools from northeastern North Carolina against high schools in southeastern Virginia.

A celebration of his life and memory was held at ECSU campus memorial service Thursday, May 16th in the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. His funeral was held Friday.
