Bear Grass Charter School - Thomas G Rose

Thomas G Rose
BIOGRAPHY:

I am Thomas Rose, a senior at Bear Grass Charter School, and my family lives in Plymouth.

I like challenges and believe if you fail at something, keep trying and moving forward until you do it successfully.  I believe in being aware of what is going on in the world on a local and global level. I place importance on engaging in my community by volunteering. I volunteer in several groups but Cross Trails Outfitters is a favorite.

Another important activity is Sporting Clays. I am honored to be on the Rose Hill Top Shots Team. I have developed from novice to one who is competitive in competitions and is a team leader. I use knowledge I gain to teach and help others. It feels great to help someone improve to reach their goals.

I participate in BGCS Scuba Club. Every year we raise money for a dive trip to somewhere interesting and educational like Florida, Virginia, and Bonaire. I have been able to travel internationally, interact with different local cultures, meet multinational people, experience different foods and embrace a different concept of time at times when traveling to foreign places. I have dealt with foreign commerce and discovered the art of bargaining.

My goals are to continue to develop and grow as a person in college while keeping myself grounded in my small town values and roots. Anywhere I go in the future, be it next week or in ten years, I will take these values with me.

SCHOOL: Bear Grass Charter School
NAME: Thomas G Rose
AGE: 17
PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR: Attending a 4 year university
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING TASK AS A SENIOR: making decisions for the future
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR UNDER CLASSMEN: You are going to fail or fall down sometimes but it's more important to keep moving forward while learning from those mistakes than to waste time and energy being mad you failed.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR: My school scuba club trip to Bonaire in the Caribbean during the last of our Christmas break. We raised money all year to help with student club members cost. It was an incredible diving experience.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS: working as an optometrist
WHO IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY: There are 3 people that have had great influence in my life.
Tom Harrison
Mack Williams
Elizabeth Rose

Tom Harrison is a Christian man who freely gives of himself to help his community and is always willing to help others. He is one of the driving forces behind Cross Trails Outfitters in North Carolina. CTO is a Christian youth organization that provides amazing experiences in which kids can learn about the outdoors and offers opportunities to learn more about God. I am very fortunate to have been involved with CTO since I was about 11 years old.  Tom Harrison is a very positive role model in a time where they are hard to find. He has been a strong, positive influence on the development of my character. I will always try hard to strive to be like the upstanding, generous Christian man he is.
Mack Williams is a strong individual who cares about helping others. He is quick to step up to help out where he sees a need. He has worked with CTO kids like myself to teach outdoor skills and responsibility. He has been a great influence on me by always demonstrating qualities of a strong minded, dependable and Christian man. Honor your word, work hard at what you do, stand up for your beliefs and be someone who can be counted on, that is Mr Mack Williams.
Elizabeth Rose is my mother. Her influence on me is strong because she shows me how to keep moving forward even through adversity. My mom does not give up and has taught me that strong determination, a positive attitude and the willingness to fail and then try again and again will get me through life's challenges so that I will ultimately succeed.  She is always there for me and has provided me with a solid, Christian foundation on which to build my character.
I AM MOST UNIQUE BECAUSE: I participate in scuba, SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program) and the NSCA (National Sporting Clays Association). I am an ‘A’ class shooter currently through my efforts with shooting.
WHAT IS THE ONE QUOTE YOU LIVE BY: "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." -Walt Disney
WHAT ARE 5 THINGS YOU VALUE MOST IMPORTANT AT THIS POINT IN YOUR LIFE: My family & friends, my faith, making sure others can rely on me, never quitting due to difficulty, and being determined to finish what I start.
IF YOU COULD MOVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD IT BE AND WHY: Bonaire so that I could try to dive at as many of the dive sites as I could and see as much of the Oceans underwater life there as possible. The ocean is very diverse and there is so much to learn from it and about it.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOUR CLASSMATES STILL DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU AFTER ALL THIS TIME: I enjoy playing classical music on guitar.
WHICH YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL WAS YOUR FAVORITE: Senior year
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND AND COULD ONLY TAKE ONE ITEM WITH YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?: a sailboat
