Greenville experiences Ophelia flooding and road closures throughout ECU game

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The city of Greenville saw many road closures due to Tropical Storm Ophelia.

On Saturday, a young man had to be rescued after attempting to drive through one of those flooded roads, with officials saying water was 2 to 3 feet deep. The rescue took place near the intersection of Arlington and Evans.

Across town, ECU fans didn’t let Ophelia rain on their game day, with many set up to tailgate and watch ECU take on Gardner Webb.

“Cause we’re true pirates, we didn’t have to come too far, and so we wanted to bring the love and show our support to the pirates because they’re going to play in it, so might as well watch it,” said ECU Fan Bryan Dowdy.

Even though some of the parking lots and tailgating spots saw some flooding, many college students still wanted to experience game day with their families for parents’ weekend at ECU.

“Because we’re Pirates’ baby, and it’s parents’ weekend, and I have to show my parents what ECU is all about,” said ECU sophomore Katie Ryan

Ryan’s roommate, Jessica Stebbins, agreed.

“We’re all actually from out of state, so our parents traveled far to get here, so weren’t just gonna like stay in and do nothing, so we’re going to rally,”

While there was fast and heavy rain seen all throughout the day, WITN’s weather team says tomorrow won’t see the same rain, hopefully clearing out some of the flooded roads.
