GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The SBI is helping to investigate this morning’s fire that destroyed one building at a Greenville apartment complex.

Firefighters were called to Treybrooke Apartments off West Fifth Street shortly before 9:00 a.m.

Flames were shooting out of the roof of the building and investigators determined the fire started on the second floor balcony but the cause remains under investigation.

The complex is across the street from the ECU School of Dentistry and many students live there.

Greenville Fire/Rescue said there were 24 apartments in the building and everyone made it safely outside, though several pets are unaccounted for.

One firefighter was taken to ECU Health Medical Center to be evaluated, according to the fire department spokesperson. Greenville Fire Rescue says the firefighter is doing well. A resident was evaluated on the scene and released.

At least two county fire departments were called in to help Greenville with the fire.

The American Red Cross says it is assisting nearly two dozen people with shelter, food, and mental health services, while ECU Student Affairs also has staff on site to help students impacted by the fire.
