Charlotte airport reopens runways following emergency landing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Travelers faced delays Tuesday afternoon after an emergency landing by a Delta Air Line plane at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport caused multiple runways to shut down.

According to the Flight Aware program, more than 100 delays were reported by 11:10 a.m. All runways have since reopened.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement to WBTV News responding to Tuesday afternoon’s incident:

“We apologize to our customers on Delta flight 2481 from Charlotte to Detroit that returned to Charlotte shortly after departure following a reported aircraft fuel system issue. The aircraft landed and taxied to the gate under its own power, where it will undergo inspection. Customers are being re-accommodated on alternate flights out of Charlotte to most quickly get everyone to their respective destinations. Safety, as always, remains Delta’s top priority.”

According to Flight Aware, more than 100 delays were reported by 11:10 a.m.

A representative from the airport released a statement to WBTV:

“The aircraft returned to the field, landed safely and taxied to the gate under its own power.

Portions of the airfield were closed to conduct the necessary inspections and have since reopened.
