MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. (WITN) - Cherry Point won three awards at the International Council of Air Shows convention in Las Vegas.

Cherry Point won the 2021 Blue Angels Military Air Show of the Year, the 2021 Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award, and the 2021 Pinnacle Platinum Award.

The air station says the Pinnacle Platinum is the highest honor and show planners believe this is the first time an air show has been awarded all three of the awards in the same year.

“We should all be proud of these achievements,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Mikel Huber, Cherry Point’s commanding officer.

We’re told this is Cherry Point’s first time winning both the Pinnacle and Dick Schram awards, and the third time taking the Blue Angels honor.

Cherry Point has had 54 air shows, the first one dating back to 1950.

The next air show is planned for the spring of 2024.
