KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - A Kinston resident and director of an Eastern Carolina library system won the state’s director of the year award.
Neuse Regional Libraries says its library director Melanie Morgan won the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association’s Director of the Year award.
NRL has 8 locations across Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties with its headquarters in Kinston.
Morgan has worked as library director for Neuse Regional Libraries since 2018. Before then, she served as library director for Madison County Public Libraries in Marshall for 4 years. She was also a media specialist for 12 years before she became library director in Madison County.
The bio on Morgan provided by Neuse Regional Libraries says since starting her position at NRL, Morgan has created and implemented the STEM 4 ALL initiative, which consists of onsite programming after school two times per week at a public housing site in Kinston to improve literacy and learning engagement.
Morgan also developed Literacy Without Barriers, which established literacy centers at four locations within the NRL region and initiated tutoring, homework help, literacy activities between parent and child, and access to technology and internet connectivity.
