MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - This Christmas will be Paul Rickman’s first without his mother and younger brother.

“It’s very tough, I have two sisters that remain and one brother,” Rickman said.

Dealing with the loss of two family members ahead of the holidays, Rickman remembers his reaction to losing people close to him in the past.

However, this time around, he says it’s different.

Rickman has recovery support group GriefShare and his leader Rod Herrin to thank for his newly found understanding of death.

“You actually can let your guard down you can relate by learning from what they’re going through and then maybe something you share will make a difference in their lives,” Herrin said.

Herrin advises people going through a similar situation this holiday season not to do it alone.

Herrin said they do receive an uptick in calls ahead of the holiday season. Considering the demand, he said the church is considering offering a special pre-holiday session in the future.
