ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) - Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten says a high school student was found on a school bus with an AK-47 pistol and a loaded 30-round magazine in their possession.

Wooten said it happened while the bus had stopped at River Road Middle School Wednesday morning.

He said the bus driver smelled marijuana on the student, and a school resource officer found drugs, the loaded gun, and a knife in the student’s bookbag.

The student attends Northeastern High School, while the normal bus route first drops off students at the middle school before heading to the high school.

“We felt it obviously necessary to go to Northeastern High School, lock River Road down, lock Northeastern High School down so we could search the entire school,” Wooten said. “Every classroom, every building. So nothing else significant was found.”

The sheriff said the student faces multiple charges as a juvenile.

  • Possession of a firearm on school grounds
  • Possession of a weapon on school grounds
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Carrying a concealed firearm
  • Possession of a weapon of mass destruction
  • Possession of a stolen firearm
  • Possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana

Wooten said they are still investigating the intent of the student and noted this could have been a terrible nightmare.

The school superintendent praised how law enforcement handled today’s situation and thanked the bus driver for taking appropriate action.

Dr. Eddie Ingram noted they are in constant discussion about school safety with authorities.
