New bike park opens in Onslow County
ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Big Branch Bike Park held its grand opening at Burton Park in Onslow County on Wednesday.
The Bike park includes several bike trails and cross country running trails over the span of 6.2 miles.
There are trails for beginners as well as intermediate trails for advanced bikers and runners.
The park, funded through grants and tourism revenue, was built in an effort to provide a bigger bike trail closer in proximity than the trails at Camp Lejeune.
City officials like Ben Warren explained the importance of a closer bike trail saying, “We had a lot of folks here in the community that are driving an hour or more to the next closest bike course, so this really provides something in their backyard that they can take advantage of.”
And local cyclists like Jeff LeBlanc, who is an avid biker and coaches a local off-road biking team explained how grateful he is for the new trails. “Oh, this course is awesome. This course is going to become our home course for practice, training, and racing. So we’ll be using this a lot. It took us four years to build a seven and a half mile course on Camp Lejeune by hand. It took the professional crew two months to build six miles of trail here.”
Onslow County officials say with the addition of the bike trail, the goal is to be able to host more regional off-road biking and cross-country events. They also look forward to the park being a resource for local off-road cycling teams to train.
The trails have a directional schedule that changes daily. The schedule was designed to ensure the safety of both bikers and runners in hopes of preventing any biker/runner collisions.
