KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) - Over the weekend, two people’s lives were saved after they fell into the Neuse river in Kinston, all thanks to an 18-year-old who jumped into action without hesitation.

On Saturday around 7:30 p.m., it was a typical evening at the Neuseway Nature Center in Kinston.

Everything was calm until some children were seen running towards the dock, with their parents running after them.

Greg and Judith Rouse were near the river and immediately called 911, but 18-year-old Zachary Grady jumped into action.

Zachary, his girlfriend and his sister were at their bird cages when they heard screams which prompted Zachary to jump in and help.

Now Zachary is being called a hero.

The Kinston Director of Parks and Rec said there is going to be a conversation between county commissioners and the city manager to see if flotation devices can be put out around the river to help in situations like this.

Zachary will be recognized and honored at the next city council meeting which is next week, June 15th at 7:00.
