Suspect shot in Rocky Mount officer-involved shooting

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital, but there is no information about his condition.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) - An investigation is ongoing after an officer-involved shooting in Rocky Mount.

Police say they were helping state troopers during a traffic stop where a suspect ran from their car at around 8:30 Tuesday night.

When officers arrived near Fenner Road and Jeffreys Road, they say they found Juan Cruz, Jr., who matched the description given by the Highway Patrol. While they were trying to take him into custody, shots were fired.

Police have not said if their two officers fired the shot that struck the 28-year-old man, but Officer Hunter Brown and Officer Damian Whitaker have been placed on administrative duty while the SBI investigates the shooting.

Cruz was first taken to UNC Nash Health Care and is now in critical condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
