GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - WITN’s Teacher of the Week for January 6 is Rachel Kelly from A.G. Cox Middle School in Pitt County.

Kelly began her career in Edgecombe County after graduating from ECU as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow with a Master’s in education. Kelly has spent the past seven years at A.G. Cox Middle School.

She is currently in her 11th year of teaching, all of which have been in sixth grade.

Kelly says sixth grade is her niche. She says she loves helping students and their parents make the transition to middle school and blossom into mature students.

She currently lives in Winterville with her husband.

The person who nominated Mrs. Kelly wrote, “I would like to nominate Rachel Kelly, who teaches sixth grade ELA at A.G. Cox Middle School in Pitt County.

I had Mrs. Kelly as my teacher two years ago and having her as my teacher truly changed my perspective on life. She taught me to have a positive attitude towards life and that things happen for a reason. She believes it is crucial to not only teach her kids academics, but also vital life skills.

Mrs. Kelly is more than just a teacher. She supports students in and out of the classroom, attending their sporting events, competitions, etc., and she supports them even if she doesn’t teach them anymore.

She still checks in on all of her past students, no matter what is going on in her life. She greets everyone she meets with a smile, and is always encouraging to students and coworkers.

Mrs. Kelly doesn’t get enough credit for her hard work and dedication to her students, fellow teachers, parents, school and community and she deserves to be WITN Teacher of the Week.”

Congratulations Mrs. Kelly!

Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
