Bowen bought his winning ticket from the Speedway on North Main Street in Kenansville. Bowen says when he first started scratching the ticket, he thought he had simply won his money back for the price of the ticket.
Bowen claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had a choice of taking $1 million as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and took home $424,507 after required federal and state tax withholdings.
