Teacher of the Week: Rebecca Dearien from West Craven Middle School

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - WITN’s Teacher of the Week for November 24 is Rebecca Dearien, a sixth grade math teacher at West Craven Middle School.

A New Bern native, Dearien says it is her dream to teach and raise her family in the town where she grew up.

Dearien graduated from ECU in 2016 and took an alternative route entering into the classroom. She says it was an act of passion and courage that she ended up where she did and she is grateful for it.

She is currently in her third year of teaching. In her career, she has served on the county’s Rookie team and was selected as the 2019 Beginning Teacher of the Year.

Dearien says it is her passion to strive for excellence and progress within her classroom, school and county. “I am a firm believer in the student teacher connection and that meeting students at a personal level emotionally and academically is the key to helping develop healthy and self motivated learners,” Dearien says.

When she is not in the classroom, Dearien serves as the school’s volleyball coach and enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters.

The person who nominated Mrs. Dearien wrote, “I am a student at West Craven Middle School and I would like to nominate Rebecca Dearien for Teacher of the Week.

I think she really deserves this because she is kind and really cares about her students, even though we get out of hand sometimes. You can ask anyone - no matter what, she will give anyone and anything a second chance.

She is always there for her students and we feel loved by her. She is always there for us. If she misses a day of school, we miss her! And she feels bad because she can’t be with us.

I love having her as my teacher, which is why I think she should be recognized as Teacher of the Week.”
