The North Carolina Commissioner of Banks has closed Cooperative Bank of Wilmington, which has branches throughout eastern Carolina.
Towns affected in eastern Carolina include Beaufort, Belhaven, Jacksonville, Kill Devil Hills, Morehead City, Nags Head, and Washington.
Subsequently, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was named receiver. No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed.
All deposit accounts, excluding certain brokered deposits, have been transferred to First Bank, Troy, NC. On Monday, June 22 the former Cooperative Bank locations will reopen as branches of First Bank.
Cooperative Bank's website says "The FDIC has assembled useful information regarding your relationship with Cooperative Bank. Besides a checking account, you may have Certificates of Deposit, a business checking account, a Social Security direct deposit, and other relationships with the institution, and tells readers to access a link for information on what to do.

"Posted by: Disappointed Location: Eastern NC on Jun 20, 2009 at 04:11 PM I have banked with this institution for as long as it has been in Belhaven. I refuse to go to Wachovia and Southern Bank where U R made to feel like U should bow down and kiss their feet. There R some really "snooty" people at those 2 banks. Everyone at Cooperative has always been so friendly and willing to help. I once asked a teller that had come from one of the other banks in town why she acted so different at Co-op and she told me that she had acted like the rest of them to fit in with her job. So sad. Guess I'll B taking my business to Washington or trying out the new bank." I do service work in most of the banks in this part of the state, for nearly 30 years. I have not seen this attitude in either of these other banks, ever. There are some people out there who are just bad bank customers, like those who regularly bounce checks and default on loans. Sounds like "Disappointed" has some axe to grind.

When one of my relatives had an account with First Bank of VA, part of the corp of First Bank that now has taken over Cooperative, they were always helpful and had the home town feeling and treated people with respect. I am hoping that First Bank here is more like Cooperative in the way it treats the customers with respect than the way some of the other banks do.
