Some consumers across Eastern Carolina could soon be logging online for free.
The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote at its December meeting on a measure to provide free broadband across the country.
Under the proposal, 25% of reallocated airwaves for broadband would have to be free across the United States.
The FCC chairman believes free access would help cover demand for broadband in rural underserved areas. An example of such an area in Eastern Carolina would be Jones County.
The plan is to auction off a section of public airwaves being vacated after television switches to solely digital broadcasting, on the condition that one-quarter of the purchased broadcasting space is used to provide free wireless internet access.
