Some consumers across Eastern Carolina could soon be logging online for free.

The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote at its December meeting on a measure to provide free broadband across the country.

Under the proposal, 25% of reallocated airwaves for broadband would have to be free across the United States.

The FCC chairman believes free access would help cover demand for broadband in rural underserved areas. An example of such an area in Eastern Carolina would be Jones County.

The plan is to auction off a section of public airwaves being vacated after television switches to solely digital broadcasting, on the condition that one-quarter of the purchased broadcasting space is used to provide free wireless internet access.

I live in a rural area in Jones County where high speed internet service is available two miles in each direction but not within the four miles where I live. I do not expect to get it for free, but feel that the service should certainly be offered to all that would like to purchase it. I have contacted my phone company for "dsl" and the cable company for real "high-speed" numerous times and they always say it's out of their hands. My hands are now tied with "dial-up". I would love to know who to contact to express my desire and would beg to get high speed availability. Don't believer in handouts and am not asking for a handout, just the priviledge to purchase. If anyone knows who to contact, please let me know!!!!!!!!!

The FCC has absolutely NO authority to make such an arrangement. Come on Congress, get your head out of the dark parts and guide this country to better days. Quit giving stuff away, because it is costing someone who is working to provide for his/her family.

that is not fair. Give free internet to some give it to all. If we have to pay then they have to pay. Besides, if they wanted internet they more than likely would have it by now.

Yeah, you know, it's part of the new wealth redistribution plan...give to those who won't work to achieve their own success. Isn't that fair...I mean, you should not have more than me just because I'm too lazy to work.
