HURRICANE ARTHUR: Storm Weakens To Category One Hurricane

Hurricane Arthur weakened to Category 1 storm in the Atlantic after bringing flooding and power outages to our coast Banks overnight.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Arthur's maximum sustained winds remain at 90 mph with additional weakening expected.

At 2:00 p.m. the hurricane was about 125 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was moving at 25 miles per hour to the northeast.


Hurricane Arthur made landfall about 11:15pm Thursday between Cape Lookout and Beaufort.

Arthur was a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour when it made landfall at 11:15 p.m. near Cape Lookout in Carteret County.

It has since moved off shore, clearing Kitty Hawk around 6:15 am. Many of the watches and warnings have been dropped for inland counties, however hurricane warnings for Dare and Tyrrell counties and waters from Ocracoke northward and the Albemarle Sound are in effect until further notice. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Bertie and Washington counties as well as the Pamlico Sound and ocean waters from Cape Lookout to Ocracoke.

Clearing skies will become the norm later on this afternoon, with the last few showers associated with Arthur clearing the coast by noon.

As of 5:30 a.m. Friday, Arthur had sustained winds of 100 miles per hour and was located east of Manteo and exiting the area.

Arthur is moving north-northeast at 21 miles per hour.

The wind threat will continue to gradually diminish from southwest to northeast as Arthur lifts across the area with the great threat remaining east of a Columbia to Ocracoke line.

Additional rain of 1 to 2 inches in possible, with the greatest amounts across Dare and Hyde counties.
