Tyrrell County Students Work Around Hurricane Irene Damage

Workers are busy in Tyrrell County trying to clean-up and make repairs at several school buildings after Hurricane Irene.

Several school buildings were flooded from Irene, including the board of education. Some offices inside had a foot or more of water in them. Many of the walls have now been stripped away.

Columbia High School and Middle School also flooded and high school students have classes in the gym, media center, cafeteria, and English building, while middle school students have to take a bus to the 4-H Center in Columbia for their classes.

The superintendent hopes that schools will be fully repaired and ready in a couple of weeks, but says that is only an estimate. He says the damage at both schools, along with the board of education building, could cost the school system around 3 million dollars. They are working with FEMA to be able to pay that.
